Health ministry to fund Ayurveda university

SHIMLA: The Union Health Ministry has agreed to fund an exclusive ayurveda university in Himachal Pradesh provided the state government enacts a law to this effect.

“The Centre is ready to fund the establishment of such a university in the hill state if the state government is willing to enact a law for the purpose,” Advisor to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, S K Sharma said.

He said the ministry had also proposed setting up a pharmacy and ayurveda nursing college under the National Rural Health Mission if the state government was interested as this would cater to the shortage of trained personnel.

Sharma said Himachal Pradesh had already been sanctioned Rs 20 crore for the next five years under the mission considering its “potentiality in the medicinal plant sector.”

Health Ministry to fund Ayurveda University is appreciable step towards the upgrading of Ayurvedic Sciences. Finally Govt is paying attention to Ayurveda. But still alot of work is required to be done. Research institutes should be set up in India for promoting research work. Also recognition of Aurveda degree outside India. The job sector is not at all satisfactory for Ayurvedic physicians. After completing five and a half years degree course in Ayurveda still the status given to Ayurvedic Physicians is not equal to Allopathic physicians. Also, jobs are deficient in our field. Govt should recruit Ayurvedic Medical Officers in Dispensaries on regular basis. But things are slowly changing as a New Ayurveda Institute is likely to come up on lines of AIIMS. Also more Ayurvedic courses should be launched in India including PG.
