Breathe in, breathe out. You do this every living second of your life. But you may take this process for granted since it happens involuntarily. But if you put in an effort to follow the right kind of breathing technique, you will benefit a lot more than just getting air into your lungs.

Pranayama is a very popular breathing exercise that people indulge in for great health benefits. But it is very important to learn the right technique from a professional trainer. However, if you want to breathe healthy while you do, you could follow a couple of simple techniques that will not only help you nourish your body cells and organ systems but also relieve you from stress caused by daily life events.

You could begin with holding your breath and balancing it. Breathe in and keep a count to four and continue holding the breath for another four counts and then exhale completely while keeping the same count. Wait for another four counts before you inhale again. Continue this breathing pattern for about a minute before you get back to your regular breathing rhythm.

Then you could take in a whole breath, to the maximum extent that you can take in. you can imagine how each whole breath you take in will rejuvenate every cell in your body. Exhale completely while releasing all the muscular tensions and release all the stressful thoughts which each exhalation. The large amount of oxygen that enters into your body not only helps in keeping your body nourished but will also help you feel fresh and less stressed out.

You could do this at the convenience of your home, office cabin, your travel to work, or even while waiting at the bill counter for the queue to move out. You could also do this when you feel that you are getting irritated or losing your temper and this will instantly make you feel better.

Relieve yourselves of the painful menstural cramps

April 30th, 2011

Menstrual cramps affect every woman at some point in time. For some, it’s minimal while for some, it disrupts their normal routine since the pain becomes unbearable.

Here are some simple remedies to ease the cramps.

Water: You can start with drinking water frequently since dehydration only worsens the condition. The already existing cramps can be minimized by keeping a water bottle or a hot towel on your stomach area. Warmth lets the blood rush to the surface and relieves pain.

Exercise and Yoga: It is also very important to have physical activity during the menses which is not what is usually in belief. People talk of taking rest and keeping physical activity to a minimum but exercise and yoga can actually help reduce the cramps.

Keep away from caffeine: The caffeine contained in coffee, tea, colas and chocolate can add to the cramps since it increases your nervous energy.
Drink hot liquids: A hot herbal tea and warmed up lemonade works wonders in relieving the pain.

Basil: This spice contains pain killing components and can be used either in the food that you are cooking or can be added into tea. You could also make a tonic of sorts with basil by boiling two tablespoons of basil to one pint of water. This is allowed to come down to room temperature while it is kept covered and one cup of it is consumed every hour to ease cramps.

Cinnamon: The anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties associated with cinnamon can ease the symptoms of menstrual cramping. Sprinkle cinnamon on your breakfast foods or add to a tea.

Parsley: This not only helps to bring down cramps but also to regulate the cycles. The juice is blended with carrot, cucumber or beetroot juices and 75 ml is consumed.

Ginger: A piece of ginger is pounded and added to water and boiled for a couple of minutes. The concoction is sweetened and consumed three times a day after meals.

Mint: Mint leaves can be added to tea and consumed. Sucking on mint candy through the day also relieved pain.

You can also indulge in a pampering mineral bath in which you fill the tub with one cup of sea salt and one cup of baking soda to warm water. This will relax your muscles. This should be done for at least 20 minutes.

With these many solutions for your cramps, you can be sure of having a happy period!

Easy sinus care tips

April 30th, 2011

Sinus is one of the most common problems a lot of people face. One of the most prominent causes for sinus to appear is allergens and also weather change. The cold weather is the worst enemy for people with sinusitis.

To relieve you of the pressure in the head region caused by sinus and the congestion, here are a few basic home remedies that you can incorporate so that you can rest well every night and have a better following day.

A simple remedy to alleviate sinus related pain would be to mix a drop of eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil. Pine tree oil can also be added with the mixture but people who have high blood pressure should avoid pine tree oil since it is known to increase blood pressure. The mixture of the oil drops is added to four cups of water and boiled and the steam is inhaled. For best results, use a towel to cover your head and the vessel like a tent so that maximum steam is inhaled. This should be done for 15 to 20 minutes to experience relief.

An even simpler relief spray that you can use is salt water. Saltwater provides more relief than you think. Boil around 250ml of water. Pour in into a clean bottle or jar and add a teaspoon on salt and mix well. If you have a spray bottle, use it to spray this saline solution into your nose. Wait for a minute and then blow your nose. Saltwater helps to thin down the mucus and help expel it naturally out of your system and relieve the congestion.

One last thing you can add into your room when you go to sleep is a humidifier. The humid warmth helps you to breathe easily since it keeps the congestion away. You can also use a vaporizer. Also remember to sleep with your head elevated as this will help avoid blockages and mucus accumulation in the head region.

Remember, these remedies are for people with mild or moderate sinus problems. If you have severe sinusitis which has spread into your respiratory organs or your eyes, then it is very important to consult your doctor since this can be helped only with a surgical removal of the accumulated mucus.

Step out into the Sun with radiant skin!

April 21st, 2011

With the harsh summer heat and long exposure to the Sun your skin begs for nothing but relief. Your skin makes up the largest organ in your body, protecting the insides. So it becomes your duty to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun and also the pollution.

All skin types require a daily routine of cleansing, toning and moisturizing. If good skin is what you want for a long time to come, then 10 minutes a day is all you need to spend.

Your day should start with cleansing your facial skin with an appropriate cleanser meant for your skin type. Avoid chemical based products as they harm your skin in the long run. Splash some warm water on your face and neck so that the pores open up. Do not use hot water since it will harm the sensitive skin layers. Take a few drops of the cleanser that you have chosen on a cotton ball or swipe and apply it onto your skin gently and wipe away with upward strokes so that the surface dust will be cleaned. If you have oily skin, make sure all the oil is cleared up and use a different cotton ball to wipe away the second time. If you are using a face wash for cleansing, use soap free cleanser.

Once this is done, it is followed by Toning. Use an alcohol free toner so that the opened pores are closed and the pH balance is restored. Rose water, cucumber, sandalwood based toners, etc would be good options. The toner is taken in a cotton ball and applied all over the face and neck with upward strokes. While the skin is still moist from the toner, apply a suitable moisturizer on the face and neck. Make sure that the moisturizer is appropriate for your skin type as it may lead to extreme oiliness if your skin is already oily or may not work well if you have very dry skin. Turmeric, sandalwood, almond, cocoa butter, neem, tulasi etc are some of the moisturizer bases.

With this regular routine twice a day you will not only have good skin but also feel relaxed and clean. You can also go for a herbal facial once a week for exfoliation and removal of dead skin cells. This will further help in the regrowth of skin cells and lets your skin breathe!

And lastly, but most importantly, apply a good sunscreen with SPF 15 and over, 20 minutes before stepping out into the sun to stay protected. Sun screens tend to make your skin oily so for people with oily skin, sunscreen in the form of gel is available which serves the purpose.

April 20th, 2011

San Francisco, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) April 20, 2011

Ayurveda is the world’s oldest and most complete holistic healing modality. Rooted deep in timeless wisdom, Ayurveda is ageless. It has been continually practiced for millennium, passed down from generation to generation, Ayurvedic medicine remains alive, enlightening and healing.

Ayurveda recognizes life as one unified spirit that contains and connects the energy of the universe to the individual soul. Ayurveda sees every life form as a unique combination of matter, spirit and mind. It approaches healing by balancing the elemental forces that make up the physical and spiritual construct of our universe. Ayurveda is the knowledge of how to live, this knowledge brings awareness of our situation here on earth, it is very practical and yet it is profound. Awareness and understanding of our true selves, the environment, and how the two interact. Ayurveda looks at the qualities inherent in all matter, to the energy that pulses through all life.

According Ayurvedic theory, there are three main constitutions make up the body. These constitutions are often referred to as doshas or humors. Every person has a unique dosha, with different combinations of ether, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements combine to make up Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Vata dosha having more air and ether, with pitta being more so fire. Earth and water make up Kapha dosha.

Ayurvedic medicine seeks to recognize the dosha in each person in order to understand any imbalances that may cause disease. By examining the doshic qualities of modern diseases, Ayurveda can balance and heal them. One such ailment that widely affects people today is Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). This disorder was known and treated by Ayurvedic doctors in ancient times, and continues to be treated by Ayurvedic doctors today. By looking at modern and classical Ayurvedic writings to shed light on the causes, we can learn holistic treatments that can heal this disorder. This disorder considered benign by some, is very serious. Millions of people struggle with ADD, and the numbers continue to rise.

Ayurveda pancha karma treatments for ADD should also be considered as part of a successful treatment plan.

April 6th, 2011

Sandalwood has long been known for its medicinal purposes. It has been used from ancient times for its multiple healing purposes. Even in the present day sandalwood has made a mark in most of the beauty products such as lotions, soaps, deodorants etc.

One of the various forms of sandalwood available for consumption is the oil. It is the simplest but most effective form that can be directly used for various purposes. It is very expensive considering the fact that it has become rare these days but the price you pay is worth the results it gives.

Some of the many uses of sandalwood oil are discussed below:

  • Anti Septic: Essential Oil of Sandal Wood is very good as an anti septic. It is safe for both internal and external applications. If ingested, it helps protect internal wounds and ulcers from infections. Similarly, when applied on skin, it protects wounds, sores, boils, pimples etc. from infections and from getting septic.
  • Anti Inflammatory: Both Sandal Wood paste and its essential oil are very effective as anti inflammatory agents. They have a nice cooling effect and gives relief from all types of inflammations in brain, digestive system, nervous system, circulatory system, excretory system etc. resulting from infections, fever, side effects of antibiotics, poisoning, insect bites, wounds etc. Sandal Wood Essential Oil is particularly beneficial in case of nervous and circulatory inflammations.
  • Anti Phlogistic: Sandal Wood Oil has Anti Phlogistic properties and gives relief from inflammations resulting from fever and viral infections.
  • Anti Spasmodic: Being a relaxant and sedative in nature, this oil works great against spasm too. It relaxes nerves, muscles and blood vessels and hence ends spasm or contraction. Thus it is helpful in treating problems associated with spasm, such as cramps, aches, coughs etc.
  • Astringent: Although very mild, still this oil has some astringent properties which induce contraction in gums, muscles and skin. This proves beneficial in terms of strengthening hold of gums on teeth, strengthening of muscles, tightening of skin etc.
  • Cicatrisant: The essential oil of Sandal Wood soothes skin and helps fading away of scars, spots etc. It has been an old practice to use paste of sandal wood as a skin pack. The same effect can be obtained from this essential oil. This oil is now extensively used in skin-care soaps, lotions and creams.
  • Carminative: The Essential Oil of Sandal Wood, being relaxant in nature, induces relaxation in the intestines and abdominal muscles, thereby facilitating removal of gas.
  • Diuretic: Due to its relaxing and anti inflammatory nature, it soothes inflammations in the urinary system and induces relaxation in it, thereby promoting easy passage of urine. It also increases frequency and quantity of urination. This helps a lot treating the infections and inflammations in the urinary system.
  • Disinfectant: It is the disinfectant property of Sandal Wood Essential Oil that justifies it’s such a wide use in the religious ceremonies and cosmetics. Its fragrance keeps away microbes and small insects and that is why it is extensively used in incense sticks, sprays, fumigants and evaporators to disinfect the whole surrounding. Moreover, this oil can be mixed with bathing water or other lotions or oils to apply on skin and wounds and ensure their protection from infections. This oil can also be safely taken with milk to cure internal infections, such as those in throat, oesophagus, stomach, intestines, excretory tracts etc.
  • Emollient: Sandal Oil soothes skin, relieves it from inflammations and irritations, cures infections on it and keeps it fresh and cool.
  • Expectorant: Sandal Wood Essential Oil behaves as an expectorant and is particularly effective in treating coughs. It also fights viral infection which causes cough & cold, flu, mumps etc.
  • Hypotensive: This is a very useful property of Sandal Wood Essential Oil. It can be taken with milk or even water to reduce blood pressure in patients suffering from high blood pressure. The paste of Sandal Wood has the same effect.
  • Memory Booster: It improves memory and induces concentration. It keeps the brain cool and relaxed and saves from undue stress and anxiety.
  • Sedative: This oil sedates inflammations, anxiety, fear, stress, restlessness etc. and induces relaxation, calmness, concentration, inner vision, positive thoughts etc.
  • Tonic: This oil can be very good health tonic for all, especially for growing children. It can be safely given to them. Since it is soothing on stomach and digestive system, circulatory system and nervous system, it helps this system function in harmony and without any side effects.

Thus it can be safely said that sandalwood oil is the ruler of all essential oils. It is unfortunate that the trees have been cut and misused and is on the verge of extinction. Hopefully, a day will come when the trees are more prominent and the availability is more easier.
