Indians devoted to Western medicines rather than traditional practices

February 24th, 2011
Western medical practices have taken over Indians to such an extent that they have forgotten the existence of their traditional system of medicine namely Ayurveda. This was addressed by G.N. Srikantaiah, Director, Department of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) after inaugurating the Mysore Branch of the Global Alliance of Traditional Health Systems (GATHS) in S.P. Bhat Hall, Institution of Engineers here yesterday.
Due to the modernization and commercialization of health services, the affordability of these services are becoming more and more difficult every passing minute and this will take its toll not only on the person suffering but also on the family. He said that Indians have not only been slaves of the British rule but are still slaves of western practices despite having traditional practices of our own.
About 80% of the Indian population follow western medicinal practices even though the traditional Indian medicinal practices provide not only cure but cure without any side effects. The Department of AYUSH will hence provide all necessary help and support to any agency that offers to promote the traditional health systems of the country, he assured

Doodh hai wonderful!

February 3rd, 2011
Doodh doodh doodh doodh doodh hai wonderful, pee sakte hai roz glassfull, doodh doodh doodh doodh… goes the ad jingle which sings about the benefits of drinking milk everyday. It is a song that we will sing along but it should become a habit that we consume cow’s milk everyday.

Ayurveda doesn’t just place the cow in the place of a Goddess but gives the cow’s milk utmost importance for the overall well being of humans and helps in healthy growth. Boiled or pasteurised cow milk is more digestible since the proteins would already be converted to amino acids. Cold milk consumption is not adviced as it is knows to reduce the effect of the digestive enzymes which in turn causes the formation of mucus.

Milk is a rich source of Vitamins A, B2 and B3, calcium and proteins. It is very beneficial for pregnant and nursing mothers and children. Expectant mothers can also consume yoghurt, a product of milk to prevent miscarriage, premature delivery or any other birth related complication. It is also known to reduce and even prevent acidity. Boiled milk with a pinch of turmeric, black pepper. ginger and cinnamon is an easy to prepare medicine to reduces the heaviness of the stomach by hindering the production of mucus.

An exhausting day can be ended with a glass of milk as it not only helps in digestion of food but also helps in getting a sound sleep.

So the next time your mother asks you to drink that glass of milk before you run off into your routine, listen to her for your own good!

Ayurvedic choice of colours

January 17th, 2011

Ever wondered why different people have different favourite colours? While you like bright, attractive colours, your best friend might just stick to sober, lighter colours. It is not just about the physical appearance of the colours but it is the type of vibrations one gets from a particular colour. According to Ayurveda, people seem to prefer one colour over another based on whether they have Vata, Pitta or Kapha body type.

Painting your house can be a task due to the availability of the choice of colours. To add to these choices  and to suit your personality,  AFM Safecoat paints has a system for Healing Paint Colors for Your Ayurveda Type that shows you how to find emotional balance through the use of color. The company does business on a “health first premise”–their paints meet the highest standards of environmental responsibility, and also contain no toxic ingredients such as solvents, heavy metals, chemical residuals, formaldehyde and other harmful preservatives.

The Ayurveda Essence color system takes the health premise a step further by offering interactive tools to help you manipulate subtle aspects of your environment to promote optimum wellness. There are 108 colors in three groups of 36. To keep it simple, they created three micro palettes that correspond to the three major constitutional types of Ayurvedic medicine: vata, pitta, and kapha. Once you know which type you are, you can select colors accordingly: whether the colors are hot or cold, warm or cool, calming or stimulating, uplifting or grounding, moist or dry, etc. Ayurvedic healing has generated many practices that promote harmony, created to relieve stress by helping us understand how to create balance in the day-to-day.

Crash diets lead to crash landing!

December 17th, 2010

The season of good food and loads of alcohol is here! It is that time of the year where you are endlessly eating fatty food and having a party and drinking alcohol and letting yourself go. You don’t think of the aftereffects when the present is this much fun. If you don’t think about it now, then don’t think about it later.

The point of the matter is this- Crash diets are not the answer.
It’s a world where the smaller size has larger value, especially with women. It’s a matter of self esteem and self confidence for women to have that perfect body that we see on television or the hoardings around.

Here are some crash diets that will do nothing healthy to lose weight but crash the normal working of your body systems.

The most common diet that we have heard of is the banana diet. As the name suggests it just includes eating bananas for breakfast, as many as you can fit in. Ayurveda says that bananas contain kapha which is cold and heavy energy which might actually have a counterproductive reaction and people might just end up putting on weight.

The next fruit diet is the grapefruit diet which involves eating half a grapefruit and drinking unsweetened grape juice before each meal. The fruit is known to contain enzymes that speed up the burning down process within the body which results in the quick burning down of food. But this is unhealthy as well since it burns down carbohydrates, proteins and fats that are required in normal amounts which will result in malnourishment.

The next one is the fruit juice diet which involves consuming only fruit juices. This cuts out the fiber and proteins required by your body. Consuming whole fruits seems like a healthier option. The fruit juice diet might just be worse if you include protein supplements along with it to compensate.

The last one is the cabbage soup diet. Cabbage is known for its high fiber content and its detoxifying properties but it also causes discomfort in your body by increasing the gas. It also results in abdominal uneasiness. It also deprives you of other nutrients causing malnourishment.

The moral of the story is this- eat healthy, exercise, keep the food consumption in check, keep all the nutrients required in your daily diet intact and don’t rely on anything that sounds like crash diets.

Shoulder pains can be taken care of with Ayurveda

December 16th, 2010

A frozen shoulder is one of the common ailments seen in people over the age of 40 and especially in women of that age. Ayurveda gives the name of Ababahuka for this problem and it blames the Vata dosha for its occurrence. The increase in Vata dosha results in the absorption of the fluid (Kapha) which gives the pain.

The symptoms include a stiff shoulder which chronic pain that increases with time and worsens during the night. The person with will find difficulty in doing everyday tasks. The causes for the condition may be synovitis , rupture of capsule or a lesion in muscle complex round the joint, a history or traums, heart or lung problems, heart surgery and diabetes.

Ayurveda suggests Panchakarma treatment and Kerala therapy which aims to bring equilibrium in the Vata- Kapha levels in the body. The popular treatment includes a medicated oil body massage. A special herbal pack also helps relieve the pain and give strength to the shoulder muscles to increase mobility.

Holistic health for your four legged friends!

December 10th, 2010

We as humans have come up with most of our scientific advancements in medicine and cosmetic fields by testing the newly manufactured product on animals to see how they react to it before trying the product on a human itself. So will the other way round work?

Ayurveda has long been used as a form of treatment to cure endless diseases in humans and is known to have no side effects unlike allopathic medicines. The point of the matter is that we can use Ayurveda for our pet dogs as well.

Ayurveda talks about maintaining the balance in the three doshas namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha in your body for holistic health. The same implies to our pets since they have similar body organs. But what we should keep in mind is that they are animals and they are designed in a particular way to survive in their natural habitat though we have domesticated them. What this means is that though we feed our dogs with home made cooked food and pamper them, it would actually be best for them if they are fed raw food since their digestive systems and their teeth are designed for the same. It should also be kept in mind that they should be fed in a quiet, calm place where they have no threat of being attacked.

Ayurveda suggests dogs to be fed raw food for maintaining the three doshas. Also we cannot treat animals the way we treat humans. Meaning, they cannot be fed at the same frequency that we eat. They need to be fed well with their regular, clean and raw food with a gap of about 12 hours before they are fed again. Gaining weight or rather, being overweight is very dangerous for them. Over feeding them and see them plump doesn’t really imply showing your love to them.

We should also keep in mind that they are designed for activity. This means that they need good exercise and lots of activity throughout the day so as to maintain their normalcy. Since they are also separated from their species we should keep them constantly accompanied either by any of the family members or probably by another pet. Leaving them alone for long hours will cause them emotional stress and depression. They are emotionally very dependent,  and they would like to constantly be aware that they are loved and cared for. They also prefer sleeping during the night with a family member since they don’t have the company of their own kind. In case they have fleas or if you are allergic to the fur, they can probably sleep in your room in a warm basket or a pseudo bed or even under your bed with a warm blanket.

Ayurveda talks about holistic health which means that one can be called healthy when the organism is physically, emotionally and psychologically in a well to do state. For dogs, the above mentioned areas will do the job of maintaining a healthy and longer life.

Occupational Overuse Syndrome- You just might be a victim!

December 10th, 2010

Like working long hours in front of the computer wasn’t enough a cause of distress, the world is now hit by a very common disorder which is lovingly called the Occupational Overuse Syndrome which is accompanied by Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI) and Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).

RSI consists usually of the pain caused in different body parts due to the over usage of the same (like arms, neck, shoulders, joints, etc) while CVS consists of blurred vision, irritated, dry, itchy eyes, headaches, inability to refocus after working on the computer too long, etc. Since these are very regular symptoms people tend to ignore them but they will have lasting effects if not treated early.

As part of the Ayurveda Congress, the Ayush and Vignana Bharati had organized a family welfare programme where the solutions to this problem was seen from the Ayurvedic point of view which was termed Ayush-IT. “It is a cause of concern because these occupational health problems are increasing and if not controlled now, these problems can develop into severe health problems,” said Dr Kumar Sheshadri, who is a consultant neurosurgeon. He further added that symptoms of the OUS are triggers for other severe problems like depression, fatigue and migraines. “It is high time that the OUS is controlled as it paves the way for serious health problems,” said Dr Sheshadri.

The Director of Ayush, Mr. G.N. Sreekantiah added that this was a concern that was rapidly spreading especially amongst the working professionals in the IT-BT sectors and practicing Yoga and following the Ayurvedic measures will not only act as a curative measure but also a preventive one.

The statistics have shown that about 85% of the affected population has the CVS while about 75% of the affected population has chronic repetitive injury (CRI).
