February 12th, 2011Shake away your blues with Ayurveda
October 28th, 2010Depression is a common term that we come across in the present day scenario. Some reach out to anti depressants to relieve them of their condition but these will leave behind a lot of side effects. The traditional medicine of India -Ayurveda, has cures for many serious disorders that exists and depression is no exception. M. Hemdev gives some of the cures that this medicinal practice provides.
Ayurveda advocates yoga, massage and meditation, which increase “prana”or the energy of life. A concoction of Ashwagandha and Brahmi powder steeped in water for 10 minutes and drunk twice or thrice a day is said to cure depression. Another natural remedy for depression, which is widely advocated, is drinking a “kasahayam” or tea made from the (Indian basil) tulsi and sage. Massaging the body and head with herbal oil and then having a hot water bath does wonders for the body and mind. These have been practiced from time immemorial in India and are very popular forms of treatment. In fact there are actually parlors which offer you this kind of massage.
Yoga exercises helps in the increase of circulation of oxygen in the system, helps the mind to relax, stretches the muscles and helps to restore the neurochemicals. Deep breathing exercises or “pranayama” help the body and mind to relax. By focusing on calm and peaceful things, the mind tends to counter the negative energy, which is present.
Aromatherapy has gained popularity of late because of its ability to help the body to relax and revive the nervous system. Inhalation of some herbal oils like rose, jasmine, lime, and grapefruit is a natural remedy for depression. Acupuncture is said to be a great mood enhancer. Eight –10 weeks of acupuncture treatment culminates in mood elevation, which is very similar to the elevation got by the use of anti depressants. Last but not least, prayer is said to have the power to heal. Religious practices and religious beliefs could help the person to cope with depression. All these natural remedies for depression may be sufficient by themselves if depression is not very severe, but in severe cases it needs to be combined with medication.

Baba Ramdev speaks against Genetically Modified seeds
January 12th, 2009
Hospet: Baba Ramdev, the world-renowned yoga guru has expressed his deep concern and opposition to Genetically Modified (GM) food crops. Addressing journalists at a press conference in Hospet on the eve of a week-long yoga camp, the Yoga Guru used strong words to oppose GM food and Bt Brinjal in particular. Describing the introduction of GM food crop as a ‘conspiracy’ by foreign multinationals’ to make common Indian people and farmers in particular totally dependent on foreign technology’, the guru said that such food is totally unacceptable as it is unsafe for health.
The guru who gives much emphasis on healthy living, practicing of yoga and a holistic approach to life, said that GM varieties of food crop can cause several illness. He was particularly critical of the effort to create GM varieties of Ayurvedic herbs which he said was totally uncalled for. The week long yoga camp in Hospet is drawing thousands of people from all over the state.
Study shows GM Brinjal unsafe for health
Meanwhile, an independent analysis of Maharashtra Hybrid Seed Company’s (Mahyco) Bt brinjal, India’s first GM food crop, has revealed that the crop was unsafe for human consumption.
The finding was based on the dossiers submitted by the seed company in its application to the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) requesting for commercial release of Bt brinjal.
The study was submitted by a team headed by Gilles-Eric Séralini of France-based Committee for Independent Research and Information on Genetic Engineering (CRIIGEN) which concluded that Bt brinjal might be a serious risk to human and animal health.
The study noted, “The parameters affected in animals fed with Bt brinjal are in blood cells or chemistry, but in different manners according to the period of measurement during the study or sex. In goats, the prothrombin time is modified and biochemical parameters such as total bilirubin and alkaline phosphates are also changed, as well as feed consumption and weight gain. For rabbits, less consumption was noted and also prothrombin time modification, higher bilirubin in some instances, albumin, lactose dehydrogenase and the hepatic markers alanine and aspartate aminotransferases. Sodium levels were also modified, as well as glucose, platelet count, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and haematocrit value. In cows, milk production and composition changed by 10%-14% .”
“Rats which were GM-fed had diarrhoea, had higher water consumption, suffered from decrease in liver weight as well as decrease in the relative liver to body weight ratio. Feed intake was modified in broiler chickens with glucose in some instances. Average feed conversion and efficiency ratios are changed in GM-fed fish. All that makes a very coherent picture of Bt brinjal to be potentially unsafe for human consumption. It will be also potentially unsafe to eat animals who have these problems. These differences are most often not reported in the summaries of different experiments, but are present in the raw data, ”the study added.
Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini’s analysis of Mahyco’s Bt brinjal biosafety data – as submitted to the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) – points out that the Bt brinjal produces a protein which can induce resistance to kanamycin, a well-known antibiotic, which could be a major health problem. The analysis was commissioned by Greenpeace.
It maybe noted here that on 14th Jan the Genetically Engineered Approval Committee (GEACE) is meeting in New Delhi to decide on the commercial release of the Bt Brinjal in the country.
Brinjal is a popular vegetable in India which is also widely used in Ayurveda (Ex: Indukantham ghritam, Danwantharam kwadham, Kantakaryavalehyam), Unani and Siddha.

Tourism ministry eyes Sikkim as yoga center
July 20th, 2008New Delhi: Sting discovered it first; Madonna ushered it into the Celebrity Hall of Fame and now the ministry of tourism wants to ensure that there are enough trainers to get ordinary tourists enthusiastic on to its miraculous powers of well being.
The ministry plans to promote institutes to develop skills in yoga and traditional systems of medicine to position India as the global destination for wellness.
The first institute of this kind will come up in Sikkim. The institution is a partnership between the state government, ministry of tourism and the ministry of health.
“We are in dialogue with the department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (Ayush) to draw up plans to produce the content for trainers,” a senior official of the ministry said. “Sikkim has taken the lead, but we hope more such institutes will come up in the future.” “These institutes will provide an opportunity to learn from a place that is recognized by the government. This way we can even guarantee the quality of people in the business.”
This institute will not only impart skills on essential asanas, but the healing touch of Indian medicines. “The focus will be not only on Ayurveda,” the official said.
“There are other kinds of medicines too and the idea is that we want to promote different Indian ways of healing.” China has already cashed in on its healing-products market and a recent white paper claimed that the industrial output value of traditional Chinese medicine touched $25.98 billion last year.
Yoga — which Jennifer Aniston has claimed to have saved her after her split with Brad Pitt— has been one of India’s most successful exports to the US, but its effectiveness has caught the imagination even in South Africa. On popular demand, the ministry of tourism is organizing a food festival with a yoga practitioner thrown in.
“Ayush has concentrated only on very theoretical knowledge so far,” the official said. “In these institutes, we will focus on developing core competency to look at India as a wellness destination to cater to a market.” While the ministry of tourism so far has only been promoting destinations in India that specialize in rejuvenation skills, this is for the first time that it is planning to get involved in manpower training.
“The ministry of tourism is also in talks with the private sector so that the students that come out of this institute get fascinated,”’ a senior official said. With healing the new exhortation even in India as countless spas springing up across metropolitan cities, the ministry hopes that its trained Indian healing practitioners will get employment.
120 Cr to be spent for Ayurveda, Siddha, Yoga promotion
November 18th, 2007Attributing modern medicine’s popularity to its scientific validation, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Anbumani Ramadoss today said the government would spend Rs 120 crore for a similar purpose for Indian medicine to popularise it globally.
“Though Allopathy (modern medicine) has evolved as a successful medicinal system only in the last 150 years, it was mainly due to its scientific validation. The Centre has now initiated efforts to scientifically validate Indian medicine systems like Ayurveda and Siddha,” he said.
He added that yoga was also a billion dollar industry which the whole world is awakening to and the government plans to make it mandatory in schools.
