New Delhi, Nov 30, 2007: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today gave its approval for implementation of the Scheme of “Development of the AYUSH Institutions” with a Plan Outlay of Rs.550 crore in the 11th Plan.

The financial assistance under various components for Government and Government-aided Ayush colleges will be scaled up from Rs.62 lakh to Rs.2 crore for Under Graduate colleges; from Rs. 2 crore to 3 crore for Post Graduate colleges and from Rs.3 crore to Rs.5 crore for Model Colleges and shall be based on college-specific upgradation plans.

It will benefit in upgrading the infrastructure of AYUSH teaching institutions for ensuring minimum standards laid down by statutory councils and raising the quality of AYUSH education in the country.

Lok Sabha, India: There are some NGOs in some foreign countries engaged in activities relating to teaching of Ayurveda and running of Ayurveda & Panchkarma centres. Department of AYUSH also deputes Ayurvedic experts to conduct orientation courses in Ayurveda in medical colleges and undertakes other IEC activities for popularizing Ayurveda in other countries. An International Ayurveda Conference was held in Budapest, Hungary in collaboration with Indian Embassy and a local NGO in September, 2007. First International Conclave of Traditional Medicine was held by Department of AYUSH in November, 2006 at New Delhi and an International Meet of Traditional Medicine Regulators and Industry was held at New Delhi on the sidelines of AROGYA-2007 in October, 2007. Patents cannot be legally granted on Traditional Indian Systems of medicine, which are ‘Prior Art’. Department of AYUSH in collaboration with Council for Scientific & Industrial Research have created a Traditional Knowledge Digital Library in five International languages on the basis of classical texts to prevent misappropriation of Traditional Indian Medicinal knowledge.

Ayurveda is a holistic health care system comprising of preventive, promotive and curative treatment protocols, which may vary from individual based on the Prakruti of the individual. However, Government of India have established Central Council for Research in Ayurveda & Siddha for standardization and scientific validation of various Ayurvedic medicines and drugless therapies like Panchkarma and Ksharsutra. Scientific validation of 8 most widely used herbo mineral preparations and development of R&D based drugs based on classical texts has also been undertaken under the Golden Triangle Partnership initiative launched by Department of AYUSH in collaboration with Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the Indian Council of Medical Research. In addition, Extra Mural Research projects are also given to reputed researchers and institutions for standardization and scientific validation of traditional medicines and drugless therapies.

Sugar free Chyawanprash from Dabur India

Dabur India, today announced the national roll-out of ChyawanPrakash, a sugar-free variant of Chyawanprash. The variant is targeted at the calorie-conscious consumers.

The company adds to address the need of the consumer in times of obesity warnings and cholesterol alerts, Dabur has developed the sugar-free ChyawanPrakash. ChyawanPrakash has all the goodness of Chyawanprash, and appeals to the health-conscious consumers and is safe for diabetics.

Recent increase in obesity cases and cholesterol consciousness is driving a lot of Ayurveda companies to launch such products. There are very few reputed players in the market with such a product.

Himalaya launches health care products in Israel

Indian pharmaceutical giant Himalaya Drug Company has launched a range of its personal health care products in Israel to further expand its reach abroad and encash on the growing ayurvedic market.

“It is a matter of pride to bring Ayurveda, which is 5,000 years old, contemporising it technologically. Synergy between Ayurveda and modern medicine is evolving and has already attracted the attention of people across the globe”, Ravi Prasad, President and CEO of Himalaya Drug Company said.

Israel is the 65th country apart from India where Himalaya now has a presence, he said at a ceremony organised to mark the opening of its first showroom in Tel Aviv.

India’s Ambassador to Israel, Arun Kumar Singh, said the launch of Himalaya’s products is yet another addition to the recent trend where Indian companies have started to invest in Israel.

“Himalaya is bringing with it thousands of years of traditional wisdom and knowledge. It will add further to the strengthening ties between the two countries and boost bilateral trade”, Singh said.

The company’s products will be distributed in Israel by a local partner, Hollander Nussbaum Ltd, a textile agency which is quite active in India.

120 Cr to be spent for Ayurveda, Siddha, Yoga promotion

Attributing modern medicine’s popularity to its scientific validation, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Anbumani Ramadoss today said the government would spend Rs 120 crore for a similar purpose for Indian medicine to popularise it globally.

“Though Allopathy (modern medicine) has evolved as a successful medicinal system only in the last 150 years, it was mainly due to its scientific validation. The Centre has now initiated efforts to scientifically validate Indian medicine systems like Ayurveda and Siddha,” he said.

He added that yoga was also a billion dollar industry which the whole world is awakening to and the government plans to make it mandatory in schools.

Punjab manufactures Ayurveda drugs at Patiala Pharmacy

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Health Department has started in-house manufacturing facility of Ayurvedic drugs at Patiala Pharmacy to provide genuine drugs to the patients manufactured from medicinal plants and herbs under scientific supervision. Raw material worth Rs. 1 crore has already been purchased for manufacturing of drugs.

Speaking after inaugurating Refresher Course for Senior Ayurvedic Medical Officers here Thursday Health Minister Lakshmi Kanta Chawla said that Punjab is the first State to start this novel experiment to provide genuine Ayurvedic drugs to the citizens of the State. Besides the Vigilance wing of the department has been strengthened to check the production and sale of spurious Ayurvedic drugs in the State. Seeking the cooperation of general public, the Minister said that they should in confidence give information about any units manufacturing spurious drugs in their vicinity

India introduces medical visa

India has introduced a medical visa aimed at assisting overseas visitors to travel to the country for cut-price hospital treatment. An initial visa is available for up to a year and can be used for up to three visits during the 12-month period.

The Government of India estimates that, on average, Indian hospitals offer treatment for 20% of what it would cost in the United States, with even bigger discounts available on cosmetic surgery. The cost of heart surgery in India is $6,000 compared with $30,000 in the United States.

Speaking at World Travel Market, Leena Nandan, Joint Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Tourism, said a task force had now been formed to assess the benefits of actively promoting India as a medical tourism destination. “It will be looking at how we can best develop this opportunity whilst ensuring that all hospitals involved offer a uniformly high standard of treatment.”

India is also keen to promote the more leisure-based health tourism focusing on well-being, spas and traditional therapies.

Said Ms Nandan: “The Indian systems of medicine including Ayurveda, Panchakarma, yoga and rejuvenation therapy are among the most ancient medical treatments in the world.

“Health tourism is already being promoted as a key selling point in Kerala where a number of hotels feature Ayurveda centres and it’s a facility a lot of holidaymakers are now looking for.”

Ayurveda gaining global popularity for efficacy, non toxic effects: Minister

Jammu, Nov 07: Paying rich tributes to Lord Dhanwantri founder of Ayurveda, Minister of State for Health Peer Mohammad Hussain Wednesday said that Ayurvedic system of medicines was gaining global popularity for its non toxic effects and of meticulous curing results.

Speaking at a function organized by Government Ayurvedic Hospital Jammu today to pay tributes to Lord Dhanwantri, the Minister said that in fact Indian System of Medicines (ISM) has not received due care in the past but now the government has given added attention to this field of medicine for its high reputation.

The Minister said integration of Indian System of Medicines with primary health centers is under process adding that ISM doctors and Paramedical staff were being provided to these institutions under centrally sponsored National Rural Health Mission.

Speaking at the Valedictory Session of the National Campaign on Homoeopathy – Workshop for Healthy Mother and Happy Child, the Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss said today, that these national campaigns being launched by the Department of AYUSH will be serving a very useful purpose of focusing attention on the urgent need to integrate the Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy with mainstream health care in the country. The integration of AYUSH services with mainstream health care has long been the stated policy of the Government, but practical integration has not really taken place in most parts of the country. By focusing on specific AYUSH interventions for common health and disease conditions, these national campaigns will, I hope, generate more enthusiasm among health administrators for integrating Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy with mainstream health care in the country.

The two-day Workshop was organized by the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH), Department of AYUSH as a part of the National Campaign on Homoeopathy for Mother and Child Care. Besides Dr. V.K. Gupta (former Principal, Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Delhi), the function was also attended by Smt. Anita Das, Secretary (AYUSH), Dr. N.K. Ganguly, DG, ICMR, Shri Verghese Samuel, Joint Secretary (AYUSH), Dr. S.P. Singh, Adviser, (Homoeo), (AYUSH), Prof. C. Nayak, Director, CCRH and other senior officials from the Ministry.
