Step out into the Sun with radiant skin!

April 21st, 2011 No comments »

With the harsh summer heat and long exposure to the Sun your skin begs for nothing but relief. Your skin makes up the largest organ in your body, protecting the insides. So it becomes your duty to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun and also the pollution.

All skin types require a daily routine of cleansing, toning and moisturizing. If good skin is what you want for a long time to come, then 10 minutes a day is all you need to spend.

Your day should start with cleansing your facial skin with an appropriate cleanser meant for your skin type. Avoid chemical based products as they harm your skin in the long run. Splash some warm water on your face and neck so that the pores open up. Do not use hot water since it will harm the sensitive skin layers. Take a few drops of the cleanser that you have chosen on a cotton ball or swipe and apply it onto your skin gently and wipe away with upward strokes so that the surface dust will be cleaned. If you have oily skin, make sure all the oil is cleared up and use a different cotton ball to wipe away the second time. If you are using a face wash for cleansing, use soap free cleanser.

Once this is done, it is followed by Toning. Use an alcohol free toner so that the opened pores are closed and the pH balance is restored. Rose water, cucumber, sandalwood based toners, etc would be good options. The toner is taken in a cotton ball and applied all over the face and neck with upward strokes. While the skin is still moist from the toner, apply a suitable moisturizer on the face and neck. Make sure that the moisturizer is appropriate for your skin type as it may lead to extreme oiliness if your skin is already oily or may not work well if you have very dry skin. Turmeric, sandalwood, almond, cocoa butter, neem, tulasi etc are some of the moisturizer bases.

With this regular routine twice a day you will not only have good skin but also feel relaxed and clean. You can also go for a herbal facial once a week for exfoliation and removal of dead skin cells. This will further help in the regrowth of skin cells and lets your skin breathe!

And lastly, but most importantly, apply a good sunscreen with SPF 15 and over, 20 minutes before stepping out into the sun to stay protected. Sun screens tend to make your skin oily so for people with oily skin, sunscreen in the form of gel is available which serves the purpose.

Deccan Chronicle: In a state where the people drink for all reasons and no reasons, it is no wonder there is an increase in the number of liver diseases. Ayurveda, allopathy, homoeo and naturopathy medicines are vying with one another to offer a solution to one of the most common health problem in Kerala.

Kamilari tops the list of medicines used by men who want an easy way out of the adverse effects of liver problems.

Liv-52, G-Liv-DS liver syrup, Savliv, Liver Rescue 4+ etc are some of the medicines that are available in the market. Apart from this various concoctions like Neem rasayana are used by people to reduce the effect of alcohol on the liver. Many drugs claim to enhance liver detoxification and prevent further damage to this most vital organ in the body.

“Many people believe that all ayurvedic medicines can be used without the fear of side effects, but it is not so. An expert opinion should be sought before one starts medication to prevent liver damage,” says ayurveda doctor Sheeba Gopinath.

Though doctors warn against the use of medicines without proper expert consultation and advice, many people prefer to buy them over the counter than seek professional help.

Detoxify is another medicine popular in the state that claims to cleanse the liver and prevent diseases. But it is high time people identified the cause of the problem before reaching for a quick solution.

San Francisco, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) April 20, 2011

Ayurveda is the world’s oldest and most complete holistic healing modality. Rooted deep in timeless wisdom, Ayurveda is ageless. It has been continually practiced for millennium, passed down from generation to generation, Ayurvedic medicine remains alive, enlightening and healing.

Ayurveda recognizes life as one unified spirit that contains and connects the energy of the universe to the individual soul. Ayurveda sees every life form as a unique combination of matter, spirit and mind. It approaches healing by balancing the elemental forces that make up the physical and spiritual construct of our universe. Ayurveda is the knowledge of how to live, this knowledge brings awareness of our situation here on earth, it is very practical and yet it is profound. Awareness and understanding of our true selves, the environment, and how the two interact. Ayurveda looks at the qualities inherent in all matter, to the energy that pulses through all life.

According Ayurvedic theory, there are three main constitutions make up the body. These constitutions are often referred to as doshas or humors. Every person has a unique dosha, with different combinations of ether, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements combine to make up Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Vata dosha having more air and ether, with pitta being more so fire. Earth and water make up Kapha dosha.

Ayurvedic medicine seeks to recognize the dosha in each person in order to understand any imbalances that may cause disease. By examining the doshic qualities of modern diseases, Ayurveda can balance and heal them. One such ailment that widely affects people today is Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). This disorder was known and treated by Ayurvedic doctors in ancient times, and continues to be treated by Ayurvedic doctors today. By looking at modern and classical Ayurvedic writings to shed light on the causes, we can learn holistic treatments that can heal this disorder. This disorder considered benign by some, is very serious. Millions of people struggle with ADD, and the numbers continue to rise.

Ayurveda pancha karma treatments for ADD should also be considered as part of a successful treatment plan.

ICMR organises first workshop for training in Reverse Pharmacology at KHS, Mumbai

April 16th, 2011 No comments »

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) organized the first workshop for training in Reverse Pharmacology (RP) at Kasturba Health Society- Medical Research Centre in Mumbai. Dr Arun Jamkar, Vice Chancellor, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) inaugurated the workshop.

At the workshop, the 22 trainees were from diverse streams – Ayurveda, modern medicine, pharmacology, biochemistry and physics. They represented institutes like Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik, Central Council for Research in Ayurveda, Institute of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, Bengaluru, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, amongst others.

The fortnight-long workshop from March 26 to April 9 was carefully divided into the experiential, exploratory and experimental domains of RP. Affiliated to leading industry and research organizations, the faculty – nearly 40 in number – presented the conceptual basis of RP, supported by their scientific studies, within the respective domains.

The workshop included site visits to advanced research units at KEM Hospital, Topiwala Nair Medical College, National Institute of Research in Reproductive Health, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring unit and also a medicinal plantation at Naman Trust.

Reverse Pharmacology, as a novel trans-discipline for drug discovery, has caught the imagination of the Pharmaceutical R & D. The path of Reverse Pharmacology, enunciated by Dr Ashok Vaidya, an eminent clinical scientist, in the early seventies, involves a journey from medicine to molecule or bedside to bench, unlike the ruling paradigm of molecules to medicine. India, with her pluralistic health care, offers a very rich reservoir of novel clinical observations. These bedside serendipitous discoveries or hits can be developed into drug leads and candidates by the RP path.

In 2007, the ICMR established the Advanced Centre of Reverse Pharmacology in Traditional Medicine – the first of its kind in the world – under the aegis of Kasturba Health Society (KHS)-Medical Research Center, Mumbai.  KHS manages a 1000-bed Kasturba Hospital and a model rural medical college, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS) at Sewagram, Wardha. It was initiated by Mahatma Gandhi as a small rural hospital, for women and children, which was nurtured for decades by Dr.Sushila Nayyar.

Honey can help reverse bacterial resistance to antibiotics

April 13th, 2011 No comments »
Washington: A study has found that Manuka honey could help in clearing chronically infected wounds, and even in reversing bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

Professor Rose Cooper from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff is looking at how manuka honey interacts with three types of bacteria that commonly infest wounds: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Group A Streptococci and Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Her group has found that honey can interfere with the growth of these bacteria in a variety of ways and suggests that honey is an attractive option for the treatment of drug-resistant wound infections.

Honey has long been acknowledged for its antimicrobial properties. Traditional remedies containing honey were used in the topical treatment of wounds by diverse ancient civilisations.

Manuka honey is derived from nectar collected by honeybees foraging on the manuka tree in New Zealand and is included in modern licensed wound-care products around the world.

However, the antimicrobial properties of honey have not been fully exploited by modern medicine, as its mechanisms of action are not yet known.
Cooper`s group is helping to solve this problem by investigating at a molecular level the ways in which manuka honey inhibits wound-infecting bacteria.

“Our findings with streptococci and pseudomonads suggest that manuka honey can hamper the attachment of bacteria to tissues which is an essential step in the initiation of acute infections,” she explained.
“Inhibiting attachment also blocks the formation of biofilms, which can protect bacteria from antibiotics and allow them to cause persistent infections.

“Other work in our lab has shown that honey can make MRSA more sensitive to antibiotics such as oxacillin – effectively reversing antibiotic resistance.
“This indicates that existing antibiotics may be more effective against drug-resistant infections if used in combination with manuka honey,” she revealed.
This research may increase the clinical use of manuka honey as doctors are faced with the threat of diminishingly effective antimicrobial options.

“We need innovative and effective ways of controlling wound infections that are unlikely to contribute to increased antimicrobial resistance. We have already demonstrated that manuka honey is not likely to select for honey-resistant bacteria,” Cooper said.

At present, most antimicrobial interventions for patients are with systemic antibiotics.

“The use of a topical agent to eradicate bacteria from wounds is potentially cheaper and may well improve antibiotic therapy in the future. This will help reduce the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from colonised wounds to susceptible patients,” she concluded.
The research was presented at the Society for General Microbiology`s Spring Conference in Harrogate.
